Yellowstone: Momentous Views and Chipmunks

The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone

Artists Point at the Grand Canyon of YellowstoneThe Grand Canyon of Yellowstone

Another BIG day at Yellowstone. Once again we didn’t make it back to our hotel until after 8pm…! There are so many interesting things to see on every road it is just not possible to drive straight back.
Today we drove out to Canyon Village to see the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. We decided to be brave and go on a hike that was quite steep, down to the lower falls. The view was just astounding, with a thundering fall and towering yellow cliff streaked pink and white and a rainbow arcing through the spray.
For lunch we tried Chilli Dogs; surprisingly tasty, although messy to eat. A flash of movement caught our eye and it was a tiny little striped squirrel like creature that is actually a chipmunk! They are tiny & so cute. We saw lots of them today.
This afternoon we drove around the rest of the lower loop, stopping to walk around thermal features, look at snow-capped peaks at Lake Yellowstone, watch Bison and Mule Deer and even saw some distant wolves! Nicky really liked some odd ducks that were swimming around with their bodies beneath the water and only their heads visible. He calls them ducking ducks [I must find their real name].
Lots more planned for tomorrow!

As expected, stunning photos, Jenny! I had never really wanted to explore the States, but you have certainly shown me how beautiful it is. I think I’ll have to change my mind! Hope the rest of your holiday is full of beautiful places, interesting people, and you make some wonderful memories to bring back to Oz.

I suspect your ducking duck may have been a Double-crested Cormorant (a bit like your Darter) or if it was small, maybe a Pied-billed Grebe. These are the only two birds that I can think of that would have been swimming while submerged. Nan
